Belt and Road Updates July 11

China’s Belt and Road Initiative Keeps Expanding and Developing Nations: China’s Belt and Road Initiative continues to expand, leading nations and billions of people out of backwardness, and into development, through massive scientific-technological projects. A relating of some of the recent, important developments: ** Indonesia has asked China to set up a special fund within its Belt and Road Initiative for investment in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Indonesia drew up a menu of 30 projects, worth $91 billion, that China could invest in. Indonesian President Joko Widodo made the request for a special fund during a meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping on the sideline of a G20 summit in Japan last week. Were China to agree to such a special fund, then Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati is doing a study to create it.     Already, the BRI is involved in Indonesia. The most high-profile BRI project is a $6 billion high-speed rail project connecting the capital, Jakarta, to the textile hub of Bandung– where the founding conference of the Non-Aligned Movement was held. The contract was awarded to a consortium of Chinese and Indonesian state firms in 2015. Another project is a $1.5 billion hydropower […]

BRI Update July 4, 2019

The Belt and Road at the G-20 Summit in Japan:  The Chinese President Xi Jinping brought the up the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in “building a high-quality world economy” in the G-20 meeting in Osaka, Japan on June 28. In his speech, President Xi said: “The G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. We, as the leaders of major economies, are duty bound to re-calibrate the direction of the world economy and global governance at this critical juncture, work together to boost market confidence, and bring hope to our people.” He emphasized the importance of thinking on a long-term basis, an idea that has been missing from the Western-dominated, short-term profit maximizing economic philosophy of the past 30 years. “We must keep in mind our shared future. In today’s world, all countries’ interests are closely intertwined. We have a high stake in each other’s future. By expanding common interests and taking a long-term view, we can realize enduring peace and prosperity in the world and deliver a better life to all our people. We must not allow ourselves to become prisoners of short-term interests and make irrevocable mistakes of historic consequences,” Xi said. President Xi, […]

Information and documents about the Belt and Road Initiative

Information and documents about the Belt and Road Initiative

We witness very often articles and commentaries in mainstream media in the west and from so-called experts on China that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) “is vague”, that there is no list of nations that participate in it, and that it has no definition nor an agency that defines what it is. Here we show that the opposite is correct. There are very clear-cut concepts of the BRI if you consult the original sources. There are also lists of nations participating in it. There are documents and reports that outline its course and development. Here are some of the sources that we in the BRIX deem as useful in this respect. Chinese sources and documents: The most important official Chinese informationsource is the Belt and Road Portal. Here, we find news, docuemtns, and updates about the BRI. Here, we also find an updated list of the nations that participate in the BRI through signing memoranda of understanding with China.  länder som har anslutit sig till BRI. The most important official document defining the BRI is the “Vision and Actions on Jointly Building Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road”. The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NCDR), […]

The 2nd Belt and Road Forum in Stockholm, held on Wednesday, May 22, the China Cultural Center, was an exceptional event and powerful demonstration of the great interest in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and cooperation with China in Sweden, a country whose political elites and mainstream media are still skeptical and oblivious to the BRI. The international nature of this full-day event was almost unprecedented in terms of the discussion of the BRI in this country. A sizeable portion of the foreign diplomatic corps in Stockholm turned out to discuss the outcome of the Second Belt and Road Forum for Economic Cooperation (BRF2) which took place in late April in Beijing. 33 diplomats including 13 ambassadors from four continents joined business representatives, academicians as well as one Swedish parliamentarian, a city councilman, and 4 journalists, forming an audience of over 100 persons. The event was organized by the Belt and Road Executive Group for Sweden (BRIX), in collaboration with the China-Sweden Business Council. Ulf Sandmark, the Chairman of the BRIX, gave the opening speech of the morning session, pointing out that the BRI is not just railways or trade routes but ‘development corridors’. The BRI is definitely not any […]

Ambassador of China Speech at BRIX Second Belt and Road Forum in Stockholm

Jointly Build a High Quality Belt and Road for a Future of Sustainable Development Keynote Speech by Ambassador Gui Congyou at The Second Belt and Road Forum in Stockholm Organized by BRIX on May 22, 2019. Excellencies, experts, scholars and friends from the business community, Good morning. Last month, the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation was successfully held in Beijing, leading the joint efforts to build a high quality Belt and Road into a new stage. Today’s seminar hosted by the BRIX group is very timely and relevant, and will certainly promote China-Sweden “Belt and Road” cooperation. Over the past six years since President Xi Jinping proposed the “Belt and Road Initiative”, our BRI circle of friends has grown ever bigger, quality of cooperation ever better and prospects for development ever brighter. Over 150 countries and international organizations signed cooperation agreements with China to build the BRI together. Nearly 40 heads of state and government and nearly 5000 foreign participants from over 150 countries and international organizations attended the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, achieving 283 cooperation outcomes and signing contracts worth over USD 64 billion. These numbers fully demonstrate that the BRI is […]
